Starting the month off strong
So QuiBids announced the Vote with Your Heart contest this month —it’s really less a contest and more of a sweepstakes, but potato-potah-to—  and if you’ve yet to sign up for the first week’s prize, don’t worry there’s still a little time. There’s also three more chances to win, since QuiBids is giving away a prize each week of the short month! All you’ve gotta do is fill out the form and then vote with your heart!

Making a difference
It was our honor last week to partner with the Oklahoma City Thunder to host a special fundraiser for Pros for Africa, a nonprofit organization in our hometown of Oklahoma City that supports the mission of Sister Rosemary Nyirumbe (who’s pictured above) and the Saint Monica Girls Schools in Uganda. It was really successful, and we got to meet Thunder stars Serge Ibaka (who’s also pictured above), Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and Thabo Sefolosha!

What all happened on QuiBids in January? We’re glad you asked! QuiBids hosted charity auctions for good causes all over the world, we announced big news for our customers in the United States, and we even took a field trip to one of the world’s biggest trade shows! Let’s look back.

Kind of amazing considering we started off in a dude’s basement in 2009, huh? Click through to find out what the criterion was and who else made the cut!

Some of QuiBids’ Buy Now prices are actually lower than Amazon’s. Did you think that Amazon was the authority on low prices online? Well that’s just not always the case, is it? We dug up a handful of awesome QuiBids products that run cheaper than Amazon’s best prices for new stuff. The lesson learned? Always check QuiBids before you buy elsewhere online!

QuiBids auctions: Tired of the grid view?

We’ve received a ton of feedback from customers about the recent QuiBids redesign, and we really appreciate all your suggestions! It’s the site you use after all, so we want to build QuiBids into something useful and easily functional for all of our users!

Achieving that lofty goal means offering options. And if there’s one thing we’ve learned from the variety and scope of the observations and criticisms we’ve received, it’s that it’s impossible to please all of our customers with a stoic, static site. So by handing you the reigns of customization, you can all tailor QuiBids to look and function way that’s best for you!

We just built in one of these new options, and you may not have even noticed it! Previously, QuiBids auctions only lined up in a grid view, but now you can toggle between a grid view and list view at your leisure. Here’s the toggle:

So now choosing between the classic window view…

is as easy as the click of your mouse. It’s never been simpler to customize how you see QuiBids! Head over to My QuiBids and you can make other important changes to your profile, such as the notifications and newsletters you receive, as well as what information other QuiBidders can see when you’re bidding in auctions.

Some QuiBidders to watch out for…

Like just about any place human beings gather — be it a playground, a bar, or an online entertainment auction — you’re going to encounter a lot of different types: wanderers, peacemakers, observers, and the strategists. Unfortunately you’re also pretty likely to run into bullies and unfortunately, QuiBids has a few.

Some call them hogs, others, powerbidders. Often their bidding strategies defy logic, at least immediately. Why spend 300 bids on a Voucher Bid auction only worth a third of that? Usually they do it to gain notoriety, to scare others away from stepping up against them on the auction block. They choose names like XXNEVERXGIVEUPXX or youcantbeatme72 and they just seem to never run out of bids, don’t they?

A lot of people who monitor QuiBids see these users bidding well past the number of bids the voucher is worth, or even beyond the cost of an item and accuse QuiBids of being a scam or a ripoff because we’re using robots or shill bidders to jack up the prices and get more people spending money on bids. This is completely untrue (a third-party audit by Grant Thornton LLP found that all of our claims about the validity of our auctions are true), as we do our best to provide a fair, fun online shopping experience for all of our customers every day, and would never-ever use bots or shill bidders or any other such tactic that would undermine the fairness of our auctions.

Unfortunately these bullies exist as something of an anomaly we can’t really control — we can’t make any user stop bidding in an auction, though we do suggest them to Buy Now when they get so committed to it that they could potentially lose money. It’s similar to warning people that they shouldn’t say certain things in public, but if they really want to do it, there’s no real stopping them.

Anyhoo, here are a handful of recent auctions won in rather absurd fashion by powerbidders. Have a look and jot down some names so you know what you’re getting into in future auctions.

From the beginning, QuiBids has implemented the BuyNow feature on its site. This is essentially a feature that allows a user to purchase a product at retail, minus the cost of bids he/she initially put into the auction. You can read the full description of it here.  On any auction, you can locate the BuyNow feature below the actual auction. Please see a snapshot of an example below, highlighted in yellow.

You can choose to use QuiBids BuyNow during the auction or after it has already ended.  That part is up to you.  Note that you have up to two hours after the auction has ended to utilize this feature and that only real bids (aka Bid Pack bids) will be taken into account. read more
